Salicylate
Salicylate: what it is, how it shows up, and which foods to be careful with.
What is it?
Salicylates are natural plant compounds (aspirin's chemical cousin) used by plants for defense. Hypersensitive individuals develop hives, asthma, nasal polyps or digestive distress on exposure. High-salicylate foods: berries, oranges, tomatoes, peppers, herbs and spices (curry, paprika), honey, mint, tea, almonds. Often co-occurs with aspirin sensitivity. Pears, peeled apples and most fresh meats/fish/dairy are low-salicylate options.
