Frequently asked questions

Which intolerances does scallop affect?

Scallop is notable for histamine. Clear on FODMAPs, lactose, gluten, fructose, oligosaccharides, sorbitol, sucrose, tyramine, salicylate, nickel and oxalates.

Does scallop contain histamine?

Scallop contains only low levels of histamine. Scallops are low in histidine and are usually sold live or frozen at sea, which stops amine formation where it starts. Like other shellfish they can act as liberators, which is a separate question from content. The Swiss list rates it 2 of 3 under “bivalves (mussels, oisters, clams, scallops, ...)” and marks it H! for rapid histamine formation and L for liberators of mast cell mediators. The letters are a presumed reason, not a measurement. Amounts vary by brand and recipe, so always check the label of the exact product.
