Note about this food

Vegetable carbon is charcoal, made by heating plant material without air until only the carbon skeleton is left — which is why it is the blackest colour permitted in food and why it survives baking unchanged. Carbonisation destroys the sugars, the proteins and the plant acids that the twelve axes here measure; elemental carbon is what remains, and it passes through unabsorbed.
